What winter Running clothing do you use?

Postby gallaghersean on Wed Jan 28, 2009 2:08 pm

Where I live it gets rather cold and snowy this time of the year and so running becomes an extra challenge this time of the year. So I have some long sleeve shirts, some sweat shirts and pants, a spandex type breathable long sleeve shirt, plus a pair of running gloves courtesy of Up-N-Running shoe store (located in Pennsylvania) and a winter hat that's suppose to be for skiing. But what winter running clothing have you found to work best for you?

I've used Underarmor heatgear undershirt Saucony 92% polyester shirt both long sleeves with an Asics wind resistance, waterproof jacket and thin lined wind resistant pants with running shorts and nike fitdry cap. NO COTTON! This combo was good for me at -3F. This was on a 25 min. run. It's hard to find gloves that stay warm at these temps without causing sweat. My other extemities, I can't keep feeling in. I'm afraid of double socking, but once they're numb they don't bother me. I also tried an Underarmor gaitor. This got moist, started frosting and restricted my breathing after 15 min. I'm from St. Louis, so I shouldn't experience these temps more than a few times a year.

Hi dougzilla,

Thanks for sharing that. I know what you mean about the gloves getting sweaty. Where did you get your nike fitdry cat, I don't think I've seen those before?

Nope. I don't waste money on things I don't NEED. I usually run in a t-shirt and some shorts. If it's below 20 degrees, I might put on a long sleeve shirt. I might put on some sweat pants if it's windy and cold. I will usually put on some cheapy Wal Mart knit gloves if it's 40 degrees or below. They usually don't stay on too long, though. maybe 3 miles before my hands are warm enough to leave them off. As long as I keep my core warm, my body can take care of the rest.

I can't run any faster or better in the newer materials coming out. If it's a race, that's a different story. Always a t-shirt and shorts. I like to use a tight, synthetic shirt and synthetic shorts.
